College is for suckas and I’m going to tell you why.

I went to good old St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, IN and it was honestly one of the best decisions of my life at the time. I got to continue my career playing football, I had the chance to leave the city of Pontiac, MI, and I had the chance to make something out of myself and mold this ball of clay we call a life into something. I graduated around 8 years ago to the day and I must say in hindsight, it was one of the biggest mistakes of my life.

I’m 29 now, I have not only a Bachelor’s of Science in Mass Communications, I have a Master’s of Science in Organizational Leadership.  What that means kids, is that I have the ability to effectively communicate with others with a camera in front of me, face-to-face, or through audio. I can direct, edit, and produce content on a professional level. I have the ability to manage and lead a team of people and deal with conflicts in the workplace.  I have five years of experience in sales, five years experience in digital content production, and four years coaching experience and I can’t get a job to save my life.

So why in the hell did I go to college?

Any job that I’ve ever obtained has been through some type of connection or employee referral. No matter how many credentials I have, I can’t seem to beat out, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know”. I can never seem to fit the criteria of an employee, employers want to hire. I’m not an entry-level employee and that’s all I seem to get paid as.  My highest pay grade was in the form of 60k in which I basically had to lie, cheat, and steal to potential college students (ironically enough) to become successful within the organization. The job market is another beast and college didn’t prepare me for this constant beat down I’d be getting.

The great thing is I’ve found my niche. I feel like I have a major opportunity to take what I did learn in college and apply it to all my life experience. You know, the procrastination, the staying up late and finishing work in the middle of the night, and the hardcore drinking. I’ve networked and met a lot of people in my lifetime and I know how to play the game, but I shouldn’t have to bend over backwards to just get an entry-level opportunity. Luckily for me,  I started this business because I picked a major that I flourished in, and felt it was necessary to actually use my degree; because nobody in the corporate world gives a damn about a sucka that went to college.
